Off-Page SEO: What You Need to Know to Rank High

I was talking with a prospective client not long ago about search engine optimization (SEO). This person knew it had something to do with getting a website to show up in the search results. But he was surprised to hear that one of the secrets to ranking on the first page is doing certain things away from your website.  It’s known as Off-Page SEO, and it plays an important role in getting your website to rank high in searches.

Google My Business Listing

The first step is to create a Google My Business (GMB) page.  This is your company’s home on the Google platform.  Why is this important? Because the Google search algorithm indexes GMB listings and checks to see if you have one. If you do, it will give you a better search position.

Off-Page SEO – Uniform Business Listings

You’ll also need a strategy to make sure your business information is uniform across the internet.  This includes things like your company’s name, address, phone number and website. It all has to be identical on the multiple publishing sites that Google indexes.

Creating and maintaining a uniform listing is not an easy thing to do.  There are scores of business publishing sites and directories across the internet.  So working with a business that can help you establish the uniform listings and maintain them month in and month out is a must!

Another important factor in Off-Page SEO is backlinks.  A backlink happens when another website links to a page on your site.  When you have a significant number of backlinks, Google considers your site to have authority and will give it a better position on the search results pages.

Getting Traffic

Finally, you will need a strategy to promote your blog content.  Blogging frequently and consistently is considering an on-page factor of SEO.  But you can promote those blogs on social media to help move traffic back to your website.  That is an off-page tactic.

An added benefit comes when you use LinkedIn or SlideShare.  Google indexes those sites.  So having a relevant post on those platforms could give you more than one entry, in addition to your website, in the search results.

The Wrap

Ninety-five percent of Americans use the internet to find the products or service they need. Ninety-one percent of those people never leave the first page of the search results.  That means if you want to get a share of the search traffic, your website needs to appear on the first page of the search results.

Having a solid off-page SEO strategy will help you achieve that goal.
