Show on the First Page: Working with Google’s Algorithm

I recently made a presentation to a group of business people on search engine optimization (SEO) and what it takes to have your website show on the first page of the search results.  Many thought just having a website was enough while others believed that once you search optimized the site, you were done.

But the truth is that having your business website search optimized is really just the first step.

Comply with the Algorithm To Show on the First Page

If you want your website to show on the first page, then you need to remember that it’s all about Google.  The company uses an algorithm to rank websites based on certain criteria.  If those factors are present and formatted the way the algorithm wants them to be, then you have a good chance of ranking well.

Simply put, if you can do what the algorithm wants you can get your website to rank higher.

Think of It As a Formula

For many of us, the idea of an algorithm is complex and confusing.  But most of us remember formulas from high school or college.  It’s possible to place some of the elements that Google requires into a simple formula for better understanding.

As you can see, there are a number of elements that go into establishing a website’s ranking that are far beyond just having SEO on the site.

In fact, three of the ten (Structure of the site, mobile compatibility and load speed) deal with the structure of the website itself or how it was built.  Five are off-page factors that the Google algorithm takes into consideration when ranking.  These must be handled away from the website. 

Only two of these elements (Search optimizing the website and regular new content) are SEO practices that are performed on the website itself.

Getting your website found online is a complicated, holistic process.  It is more than just optimizing your website.  It involves complying with what the Google search algorithm rewards and understanding that it is an on-going process. 

To show on the first page and stay there means dedicating your brand to all of the practices involved.
